Kvantointitoiminta refers to the process of quantization in Finnish. Quantization is a fundamental concept in signal processing and digital representation, where a continuous range of values is mapped to a smaller, discrete set of values. This transformation is essential for converting analog signals into a digital format that can be processed, stored, and transmitted by computers.

In analog-to-digital conversion (ADC), quantization is one of the key stages, following sampling. Sampling discretizes the signal in time, while quantization discretizes it in amplitude. For example, if a signal has a voltage that can vary continuously between 0 and 5 volts, quantization might divide this range into a limited number of levels, such as 0-1V, 1-2V, 2-3V, 3-4V, and 4-5V. Each specific voltage within these ranges would then be represented by a single, discrete value corresponding to its assigned level.

The number of discrete levels used in quantization is determined by the number of bits allocated to represent each sample. More bits result in more quantization levels, leading to a more accurate representation of the original analog signal and a reduction in quantization error, which is the difference between the original analog value and its quantized digital representation. However, more bits also mean larger data sizes and potentially higher processing demands.

Quantization is employed in various applications, including digital audio and image processing, where continuous analog waveforms and light intensities are converted into digital data. The choice of quantization strategy and the number of levels significantly impact the quality and fidelity of the resulting digital signal.
