Kuramaa

Kuramaa is a historical region in the Baltic region of Northern Europe, located on the eastern shore of the Gulf of Riga. It is bordered by the Courland Peninsula to the west, Livonia to the north, and Samogitia to the east. The region is known for its rich history, diverse culture, and strategic importance.

The name "Kuramaa" is derived from the Livonian word "kurama," meaning "land of the Kuronians," a Baltic tribe that inhabited the region. The Kuronians were known for their seafaring skills and their role in the Hanseatic League, a medieval commercial and defensive confederation.

Kuramaa was a part of the Livonian Order, a medieval Teutonic Order state, from the 13th century until the 16th century. The region was then incorporated into the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and later into the Russian Empire. After the Russian Revolution, Kuramaa became part of the Republic of Latvia.

Today, Kuramaa is a part of the Republic of Latvia and is known for its picturesque landscapes, including the Kurzemes Piedienas National Park, and its cultural heritage, such as the ancient Kuronian castles and the Kuronian dialect of the Latvian language. The region is also known for its seafood, particularly the famous "Kurama" herring.
