They serve to define how progress towards an objective will be measured. Unlike a simple to-do list, key results are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART). They are designed to be quantitative indicators of success. For example, if an objective is to "Improve customer satisfaction," a key result might be "Increase Net Promoter Score (NPS) from 40 to 60 by the end of the quarter" or "Reduce average customer support response time by 15% within three months." The selection of well-defined key results is essential for providing a clear path to achieving the overarching objective and allows for regular tracking and assessment of progress. They help teams focus their efforts on activities that will have the most significant impact and provide a transparent way to communicate success or identify areas needing adjustment.
