Kujutuslaad

Kujutuslaad is a term used in Estonian art and literary theory to denote the mode or manner of depiction in a work. It describes how images, scenes, or ideas are presented to the audience, and encompasses both visual representation and descriptive or narrative portrayal.

Etymology: the word is formed from kujutus 'depiction, image' and laad 'type, quality'.

Scope and usage: In analysis, kujutuslaad refers to the qualitative characteristics of depiction, such as realism versus stylization, level of detail, abstraction, symbolic or metaphorical content, and the narrative or visual perspective through which perception is framed. It may vary across media—painting, film, prose, or poetry—and across historical periods or cultural contexts.

Typologies: Scholars have proposed several provisional categories, including realist kujutuslaad, impressionistic or lyrical kujutuslaad, symbolic or allegorical kujutuslaad, and experimental or cinematic kujutuslaad. The boundaries are fluid, and a single work may mix patterns.
