Krydsreaktion refers to a phenomenon where an antibody that has been produced in response to one antigen also binds to another antigen that is structurally similar. This occurs because the immune system's response is not always perfectly specific. When a foreign substance, like a bacterium or virus, enters the body, the immune system generates antibodies to target it. These antibodies have a unique shape designed to fit a specific part of the foreign substance, known as an epitope.

However, if another substance shares a similar epitope, even if it is not the original target, the pre-existing antibody might still recognize and bind to it. This cross-binding can lead to several outcomes. In some cases, it can cause a false positive result in diagnostic tests. For example, if a test is designed to detect a specific virus, and the patient has antibodies to a different but related virus, the test might incorrectly indicate the presence of the targeted virus.

In other instances, cross-reactions can be involved in autoimmune diseases. Here, the body mistakenly produces antibodies against its own tissues because these tissues possess antigens that resemble those of foreign invaders. This can lead to the immune system attacking the body's own cells.
