Chromite is the principal ore of chromium, a metal essential for various industrial applications, most notably in the production of stainless steel and other alloys due to its corrosion resistance and hardness.

These deposits are typically found in mafic and ultramafic igneous rocks, such as layered intrusions and ophiolite complexes. Layered intrusions are characterized by distinct, repeating sequences of igneous rock layers, where chromite often concentrates in specific layers, forming economically viable seams.
