Kreuzkurs

Kreuzkurs, also known as crossing course, is a nautical term referring to a situation where two vessels are on a collision course. This occurs when both vessels are on a track that will intersect at a future point, and neither is taking sufficient action to avoid a potential collision. The term specifically denotes that the relative bearing between the two vessels is not changing, indicating that they are on a direct collision path.

When a Kreuzkurs is identified, immediate and decisive action is required by the vessels involved to prevent a collision. Maritime regulations, such as the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs), outline the responsibilities of vessels in such situations. Generally, the vessel that has the other vessel on its starboard (right) side is the give-way vessel and must take action to steer well clear. The other vessel, the stand-on vessel, must maintain its course and speed, unless it becomes apparent that the give-way vessel is not taking sufficient action, at which point the stand-on vessel may take action to avoid collision.

Early detection and recognition of a Kreuzkurs are crucial. This is achieved through constant lookout, use of radar and other navigational equipment, and understanding the principles of relative motion. Ignoring a Kreuzkurs can lead to catastrophic consequences, including damage to vessels, pollution, and loss of life. Therefore, proficient seamanship involves not only recognizing a Kreuzkurs but also implementing appropriate avoidance maneuvers promptly and effectively.
