Kotido

Kotido is the principal town and administrative center of Kotido District in the Karamoja sub-region of northeastern Uganda. It hosts district offices and serves as the district’s main market town and service hub for government, commerce, and education.

Geography and climate: The town sits on the Karamoja savannah plain, characterized by hot, dry conditions with a short, irregular rainy season. The surrounding landscape is largely open grassland used by pastoralist communities for grazing and settlement.

History and administration: Kotido developed as an administrative center during the colonial era and remains an important local government seat within Karamoja. District-level offices, police, and other public services are located there to serve the district’s rural population.

Economy and infrastructure: The local economy is driven by livestock trading, cross-border commerce, and small-scale agriculture. Markets in Kotido connect herders from surrounding villages to buyers in other districts. The town has basic infrastructure, including schools, clinics, and a transport network linking it to other towns in Karamoja and northern Uganda.

Demographics and culture: The district is inhabited by Karimojong communities, along with other ethnic groups from the Karamoja region. Karimojong is widely spoken, with Swahili and English used in official and commercial settings.

Education and health: Kotido provides several primary and secondary schools and basic health services through public and private providers, serving residents of Kotido District and neighboring areas.
