Koodekset

Koodekset, a Finnish term, broadly translates to "codes" or "sets of rules." In its most common usage, it refers to the principal legal codes of Finland. These comprehensive compilations of laws are fundamental to the Finnish legal system, providing the framework for various areas of law. The main koodekset include the Criminal Code (Rikoslaki), which defines offenses and their penalties; the Civil Code (Siviililaki), covering private law matters like contracts and property; the Code of Procedure (Oikeudenkäymiskaari), outlining legal processes; and the Administrative Code (Hallintolaki), governing administrative actions and decision-making.

These codes are not static documents but are subject to amendment and reform as societal needs and legal interpretations evolve. They are enacted and modified by the Finnish Parliament and are essential for ensuring legal certainty and the consistent application of justice. Beyond the formal legal codes, the term koodekset can also be used in a more general sense to describe any set of established rules or principles governing a particular activity or community, such as ethical codes within professions or behavioral guidelines in social settings. However, its primary association in Finnish discourse is with the foundational legislative texts.
