Kontaktsticking

Kontaktsticking is a technique used in the production of vinyl records, particularly in the pressing process. It refers to the method of applying a thin layer of adhesive, known as a "sticking compound," to the surface of a metal master or lacquer disc before the final pressing. This adhesive ensures that the vinyl blank, which is heated and pressed against the master, adheres properly during the molding process.

The process begins with the preparation of the metal master or lacquer disc, which contains the audio grooves cut into its surface. Before pressing, the master is coated with a thin layer of sticking compound, typically a wax-based or synthetic resin material. This layer helps to bond the vinyl blank to the master during the pressing cycle, preventing air bubbles and ensuring a smooth, high-quality surface.

Kontaktsticking is particularly important in achieving clarity and detail in the final vinyl record. If the vinyl does not adhere properly to the master, it can result in a rough surface, poor sound quality, or even defects such as "fish-eyes" or air pockets. The technique also helps to minimize wear on the master, as the sticking compound acts as a protective barrier between the master and the vinyl.
