It refers to a heat transfer process where thermal energy is exchanged between two or more objects that are in direct physical contact. This method relies on the principle of conduction, where heat energy is passed from particle to particle within the materials.

In practice, contact heating involves bringing a hotter object into direct touch with a colder object. The temperature difference between the two causes the molecules in the hotter object to vibrate more vigorously. These vibrations are then transferred to the molecules of the colder object at the point of contact, increasing its internal energy and thus its temperature. The rate of heat transfer depends on factors such as the temperature difference, the thermal conductivity of the materials, and the area of contact.

Common applications of contact heating include cooking, where a pan is heated on a stovetop and then transfers heat to food, and industrial processes like welding or heat treatment of metals. It is also a fundamental concept in many everyday phenomena, such as holding a warm mug or touching a hot surface. The efficiency of contact heating can be influenced by the smoothness of the surfaces in contact; rougher surfaces may have less effective contact and therefore slower heat transfer.
