These ions can precipitate to form carbonate minerals, such as limestone, over geological timescales. Volcanic activity also releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, contributing to the abiotic carbon cycle.

The balance between biotic and abiotic carbon pathways is critical for maintaining the Earth's climate and supporting life. Human activities, such as deforestation and the burning of fossil fuels, can disrupt these pathways, leading to increased carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere and contributing to climate change.
