Klimagasspåvirkning refers to the impact that greenhouse gases have on the Earth's climate. Greenhouse gases are atmospheric gases that trap heat, warming the planet. The primary greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), and fluorinated gases. These gases occur naturally in the atmosphere, but human activities have significantly increased their concentrations.

The burning of fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, and natural gas, for energy production, transportation, and industry is the largest contributor to the rise in CO2 levels. Deforestation also plays a role, as trees absorb CO2 from the atmosphere. Methane is released from agricultural activities like livestock farming and rice cultivation, as well as from the decomposition of organic waste in landfills and from natural gas leaks. Nitrous oxide is emitted from agricultural and industrial activities, as well as from the combustion of fossil fuels. Fluorinated gases, while present in smaller quantities, are potent greenhouse gases with very long atmospheric lifetimes, and are used in refrigerants, aerosols, and industrial processes.

The increased concentration of these gases in the atmosphere leads to an enhanced greenhouse effect, trapping more heat and causing global warming. This warming trend is associated with a range of climate changes, including rising global temperatures, changes in precipitation patterns, more frequent and intense heatwaves, sea-level rise due to thermal expansion of water and melting glaciers and ice sheets, and ocean acidification.
