Kliimamuutusteks

Kliimamuutusteks is the Estonian term for climate change. It refers to the long-term alteration in Earth's average weather patterns, including temperature, precipitation, and wind, over extended periods. Scientists widely agree that the current rapid changes are primarily driven by human activities, particularly the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

The main drivers of these changes include the burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas for energy production, transportation, and industrial processes. Deforestation also contributes significantly, as trees absorb carbon dioxide, a major greenhouse gas. These emissions trap heat, leading to a gradual warming of the planet, a phenomenon known as global warming.

The consequences of climate change are diverse and far-reaching. They include rising global temperatures, which can lead to more frequent and intense heatwaves, melting glaciers and ice sheets, and subsequently, sea-level rise. Changes in precipitation patterns can result in more severe droughts in some regions and increased flooding in others. Furthermore, climate change can impact ecosystems, leading to biodiversity loss and affecting agricultural productivity. Understanding and addressing kliimamuutusteks is a critical global challenge.
