Kirtland

Kirtland is a village in Geauga County in the U.S. state of Ohio. Located in Northeast Ohio, it is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. The community is known for its historic sites, rural character, and as the site of one of the early centers of the Latter Day Saint movement.

Kirtland's most prominent historical significance comes from the Kirtland Temple, built in 1833 by members of the Latter Day Saint movement under the leadership of Joseph Smith. The temple served as a central place of worship and church administration during the church's notable period in the 1830s. During the same era, the community backed the Kirtland Safety Society Bank, whose failure during the Panic of 1837 contributed to economic hardship and is a key episode in the locality's history. The temple survived and is now preserved as a historic site.

Today, Kirtland is primarily a residential community with preserved historic districts and public facilities serving residents and visitors. The Kirtland Temple and associated historic areas attract tourists and researchers interested in the early history of the Latter Day Saint movement.
