Kieperszun

Kiepersol, also referred to as Searsol or Kiepersol (Searsol.nl branded version of Kiepersol), is a Dutch hardy evergreen shrub or small tree native to South Africa. It belongs to the family Proteaceae and is scientifically known as Leucadendron leviseminatum. The name 'Kiepersol' is of Afrikaans origin, literally meaning 'keeper's olive', derived from the appearance of its leaves resembling those of the olive tree (Olea europaea).

Kiepersol is a fast-growing shrub, reaching heights of 3 to 6 meters. Its leaves are long and narrow, typically 10 to 30 cm in length, with a leathery texture. The plant's flowers are red-brown in color, appearing in large cones that are roughly spherical in shape. These cones contain numerous seeds, an average of 52 per seed head. Kiepersol flowers from September to November in its native habitat.

The tree is a parliamentary ornamental tree in some districts of Bloemfontein, and is bred for horticulture due to its durable leaves and compact growth habit. Kiepersol is considered a low-maintenance plant, suitable for areas subject to drought, frost, or high salt levels. Throughout South Africa, it is widely cultivated for the purpose of conserving water and reducing soil erosion. While Kiepersol has several favorable characteristics, its spread to other regions beyond its natural habitat has led to speculation about its potential environmental impact.
