Keratinootsüütide

Keratinootsüütide is the Estonian term for keratinocytes. Keratinocytes are the main type of cell found in the epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin. They are responsible for producing keratin, a tough and fibrous protein that forms the structural component of skin, hair, and nails. These cells originate in the basal layer of the epidermis and undergo a process of differentiation as they migrate towards the skin's surface. During this migration, they flatten and accumulate keratin, eventually forming the protective barrier of the stratum corneum. This continuous shedding and renewal of keratinocytes is essential for maintaining skin health and integrity, providing a defense against environmental factors and preventing water loss. The programmed death of keratinocytes is also a crucial part of this renewal process.
