Keratinootsüütidele, also known as keratinocytes, are the main type of cell found in the epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin. These cells are responsible for producing keratin, a tough and fibrous protein that forms the protective outer layer of the skin, hair, and nails. Keratinocytes originate in the basal layer of the epidermis and undergo a process of differentiation as they move towards the surface. During this journey, they accumulate keratin and eventually flatten and die, forming the stratum corneum, the protective barrier of the skin.

The life cycle of a keratinocyte is approximately 30 days. New cells are constantly produced in the basal layer to replace those that are shed from the surface. This continuous renewal process is essential for maintaining the skin's integrity and its barrier function against environmental insults. Keratinocytes also play a role in wound healing by migrating to cover damaged areas. Furthermore, they are involved in the immune response of the skin, producing cytokines and chemokines that help to combat infection. The health and function of keratinocytes are crucial for maintaining healthy skin and preventing various skin conditions.
