Kaukolämmitysverkot, also known as district heating networks, are systems designed to deliver heat to buildings from a central source. These networks typically consist of a network of insulated pipes that circulate hot water or steam. The heat is generated in a power plant or an industrial facility, where it can be a byproduct of electricity generation or a primary product. This centralized heat production is often more efficient and environmentally friendly than individual heating systems in each building.

The primary components of a district heating network include the heat source, the distribution network, and the connection to individual buildings. The heat source can be a variety of facilities, such as combined heat and power (CHP) plants, biomass boilers, geothermal power plants, or waste incineration plants. The distribution network comprises underground pipes that carry the heated medium to consumers. At the consumer's end, a heat exchanger transfers the heat from the district heating network to the building's internal heating and hot water systems.

District heating offers several advantages, including reduced local emissions, efficient use of energy resources, and the ability to utilize various fuel sources, including renewable and waste heat. It can also contribute to urban planning by reducing the need for individual boiler rooms and chimneys in buildings. The efficiency of these networks is maintained through proper insulation of pipes to minimize heat loss during distribution and regular maintenance to ensure system integrity.
