Karlovci

Karlovci is a town located in the Srem District of Vojvodina, Serbia. It lies on the northern slopes of the Fruška Gora mountain, along the Danube River. Historically, the town is known by its Serbian name, Sremski Karlovci, and also by its Hungarian name, Karlóca. It is situated approximately 8 kilometers south of Novi Sad, the administrative center of Vojvodina.

The town has a rich and complex history, dating back to medieval times. It rose to prominence in the 17th and 18th centuries as a significant religious and cultural center for Serbs living under Habsburg rule. During this period, Karlovci became the seat of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the Habsburg Monarchy, a status that greatly influenced its development. Notable landmarks include the Patriarchal Palace, the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas, and the Gymnasium of Karlovci, one of the oldest secondary schools in Serbia. The town is also famous for its wine production, particularly its Bermet wine, a traditional dessert wine with a unique aromatic profile.
