KarksiNuia

KarksiNuia is a former municipality in southern Estonia, located within Viljandi County. It was established in 1998 by merging Karksi and Nuia towns. The municipality encompassed a territory of 199.6 square kilometers and had a population of approximately 3,500 people prior to its dissolution. The administrative center of KarksiNuia was the town of Karksi-Nuia, which is now the largest settlement in the modern Mulgi Parish.

The history of the Karksi region dates back centuries, with evidence of settlement found in archaeological findings. Karksi Castle, a medieval fortress, played a significant role in the area's strategic importance. The town of Karksi-Nuia itself developed from the merging of two smaller settlements, Karksi and Nuia, over time. The economy of KarksiNuia was historically based on agriculture, with some industrial activities also present.

In 2017, as part of a nationwide administrative reform, KarksiNuia was merged with other neighboring municipalities, including Halliste, Helme, and Pärsti, to form the new Mulgi Parish. This administrative change aimed to consolidate local government services and improve efficiency. The geographical area formerly known as KarksiNuia now constitutes a significant part of Mulgi Parish, retaining its historical and cultural significance within the new administrative unit.
