Karbonyyliä refers to the carbonyl group, a functional group in organic chemistry consisting of a carbon atom double-bonded to an oxygen atom. Its chemical formula is C=O. This group is a key feature in many important organic molecules, including aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, esters, amides, and acid halides. The presence of the carbonyl group significantly influences the reactivity and physical properties of a molecule.

The carbon atom in the carbonyl group is electrophilic due to the electronegativity of the oxygen atom, which pulls electron density away from the carbon. This makes the carbon susceptible to nucleophilic attack. The oxygen atom, on the other hand, is nucleophilic and can participate in hydrogen bonding.
