Karbohydraatgroepen, also known as carbohydrate classifications, refer to the ways in which carbohydrates are categorized based on their molecular structure. The most fundamental classification divides carbohydrates into monosaccharides, disaccharides, oligosaccharides, and polysaccharides.

Monosaccharides are the simplest carbohydrates, consisting of a single sugar unit. Examples include glucose, fructose, and galactose. They are the building blocks for larger carbohydrate molecules and serve as a primary source of energy for living organisms.

Disaccharides are formed when two monosaccharide units are joined together by a glycosidic bond. Common disaccharides include sucrose (glucose + fructose), lactose (glucose + galactose), and maltose (glucose + glucose). These are often found in foods and are broken down into monosaccharides during digestion.

Oligosaccharides are composed of a short chain of monosaccharide units, typically between three and ten. They can have various biological functions, including roles in cell recognition and immune responses.

Polysaccharides are complex carbohydrates made up of long chains of monosaccharide units. They can be linear or branched. Examples include starch and glycogen, which are storage forms of glucose in plants and animals, respectively. Cellulose, another polysaccharide, provides structural support in plant cell walls. Carbohydrate groups are crucial for understanding the properties and functions of these essential biomolecules.
