Kansanterveyslaitokset

Kansanterveyslaitokset, meaning "Public Health Institutes," was a historical Finnish term referring to a network of state institutes dedicated to public health, research, surveillance, and laboratory services. Operating primarily during the 20th century, these institutes worked under the oversight of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health and served to support public health policy, disease prevention, and health statistics.

The network encompassed several specialized institutes focusing on fields such as epidemiology, laboratory diagnostics, nutrition and toxicology, environmental health, and occupational health. Their activities included monitoring disease trends, conducting public health research, performing diagnostic testing, and providing expert guidance to authorities on health protection and preventive measures.

In the course of administrative reforms from the late 20th century, the Kansanterveyslaitokset were reorganized and consolidated into a single national authority, known as Kansanterveyslaitos (National Public Health Institute, KTL). In subsequent reforms, KTL and related units were merged or reorganized into the current Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare, Terveyden ja hyvinvoinnin laitos (THL). Today, Kansanterveyslaitokset is used mainly in historical contexts to describe the former network rather than an active organization.
