Jamgön

Jamgön is a Tibetan term that translates to "protector" or "embodiment of protection." It is often used in Tibetan Buddhism to refer to a lineage of spiritual teachers who are believed to be emanations of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara, the embodiment of compassion. These Jamgön figures are highly revered and are seen as vital to the spiritual well-being of Tibet and its people.

The most prominent Jamgön figure in contemporary Tibetan Buddhism is the Jamgön Kongtrul lineage. The first Jamgön Kongtrul Lodrö Thaye (1813–1899) was a pivotal figure in the Rimé (non-sectarian) movement in Tibet. He was a prolific scholar, artist, and yogi who worked to preserve and revitalize Tibetan Buddhist traditions. His teachings and writings continue to influence Tibetan Buddhism today. Subsequent reincarnations of Jamgön Kongtrul are recognized and continue to guide practitioners.
