JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is a widely used method of lossy compression for digital images, particularly for those images produced by digital photography. The term "JPEG" can refer to the image compression standard itself, or to the specific file format that uses this standard. JPEG is the most common format for storing and transmitting photographic images on the World Wide Web.

The JPEG standard was developed by the Joint Photographic Experts Group, a working group of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). The standard was first published in 1992 as ISO/IEC 10918-1. It has since been updated and extended, with the latest version being ISO/IEC 10918-1:2016.

JPEG uses a form of lossy compression called Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) compression. This type of compression works by dividing the image into 8x8 pixel blocks, and then applying a mathematical transformation to each block. The result is a set of coefficients that represent the image in a more compact form. When the image is decompressed, the coefficients are used to reconstruct the original image, but some of the detail is lost in the process.

The JPEG format supports a wide range of image sizes and color depths, and it is widely supported by image editing software and web browsers. However, because JPEG is a lossy format, it is not suitable for applications where image quality is critical, such as in medical imaging or scientific research. In such cases, lossless formats like PNG or TIFF are typically used.
