JúcarXúquer

The Júcar River, known as Xúquer in Valencian, is a significant river in eastern Spain. It originates in the Montes Universales in the province of Cuenca, Castile-La Mancha, and flows eastward across the Valencian Community before emptying into the Mediterranean Sea near Cullera. The river's course is characterized by a varied landscape, transitioning from mountainous terrain to more fertile plains as it approaches the coast.

Historically, the Júcar has played a crucial role in the development of the regions it traverses. Its waters have been vital for agriculture, particularly in the irrigated huerta (orchard-garden) areas of Valencia. The river's flow is regulated by several reservoirs, most notably the La Serena Dam, which are essential for water management, flood control, and hydroelectric power generation. These reservoirs have significantly altered the river's natural flow regime.

The Júcar basin covers an area of approximately 21,000 square kilometers. Its tributaries include the Cabriel, Sellent, and Albaida rivers. The river's estuary is an important ecological area, supporting diverse plant and animal life.
