Järjestyslukuarvot, often translated as ordinal values or ranks, are numbers used to indicate the position or order of an item within a sequence. Unlike cardinal numbers which count the quantity of items, ordinal numbers specify placement. For example, in a race, first, second, and third place are ordinal values.

In mathematics, ordinal numbers are a generalization of the natural numbers used to study well-ordered sets. They extend the concept of ordering beyond finite sequences to infinite ones. The simplest infinite ordinal is omega ($\omega$), representing the order type of the natural numbers ($0, 1, 2, ...$). Subsequent ordinals are formed by adding to existing ones, such as $\omega + 1$, $\omega + 2$, and so on, and then considering limits like $\omega \cdot 2$ and $\omega^2$.

Ordinal values are fundamental in set theory and logic, particularly in the study of well-ordering and transfinite induction. They provide a rigorous framework for understanding orderings of immense size. In everyday language and various applications like statistics, ordinal values are used to represent rankings, priority levels, or ordered categories. For instance, survey responses like "strongly agree," "agree," "neutral," "disagree," and "strongly disagree" form an ordinal scale.
