Intravenoosi refers to the administration of fluids, medications, or nutrients directly into a patient’s vein through a needle or catheter inserted into a vein. This method, commonly known as intravenous (IV) therapy, is widely used in medical settings to deliver treatments efficiently and quickly. Intravenous administration bypasses the digestive system, allowing substances to enter the bloodstream almost immediately, which is particularly useful in emergencies or when oral intake is not feasible.

The process involves inserting a small, hollow needle or catheter into a vein, typically in the arm, hand, or other accessible areas. The needle is connected to a tube that leads to a bag or bottle containing the solution to be administered. IV therapy is employed for various purposes, including hydration, delivering antibiotics or chemotherapy, providing pain relief, and correcting electrolyte imbalances. It is also used during surgeries, labor and delivery, and in cases of severe dehydration or shock.

Intravenous administration offers precise control over dosage and ensures rapid absorption of medications or fluids. However, it carries risks such as infection, vein irritation, or complications from improper insertion. Proper aseptic techniques and monitoring are essential to minimize these risks. In some cases, patients may require long-term IV access, such as through a central venous catheter or a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC line), for extended treatment periods.
