Insuliinisignalinement

Insuliinisignalinemä is the process by which cells respond to the hormone insulin. Insulin binds to its receptor on the cell surface, initiating a cascade of intracellular events. This binding causes the insulin receptor to activate itself and then phosphorylate other proteins, most notably the insulin receptor substrate (IRS) proteins.

The activated IRS proteins then recruit and activate downstream signaling molecules, including phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K). PI3K, in turn, generates lipid messengers that activate protein kinases, such as Akt. Akt plays a crucial role in regulating various cellular processes.

One of the primary effects of insulin signaling is to promote glucose uptake into cells, particularly muscle and fat cells, by stimulating the translocation of glucose transporter type 4 (GLUT4) to the cell membrane. Insulin signaling also affects glycogen synthesis, lipid metabolism, and protein synthesis. Aberrations in the insulin signaling pathway are implicated in metabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes, where insulin resistance can develop, leading to impaired glucose regulation.
