Inoculating

Inoculating is the act of introducing a material such as a microorganism, antigen, or other biological agent into a system to initiate growth, immune response, or fermentation. The term is used in medicine, microbiology, agriculture, and food production, and its precise meaning depends on context.

In microbiology, inoculation refers to placing a sample onto or into a culture medium to observe growth or to isolate specific organisms. Procedures emphasize aseptic technique to prevent contamination and to protect the operator.
