Inflectional systems encode categories such as case, number, and gender in nouns and pronouns, and tense, aspect, mood, person, and number in verbs, as well as degree and agreement in adjectives.

Languages vary in their inflectional complexity. Analytic languages rely less on inflection and more on word order and function words, while synthetic languages use inflection extensively. Within synthetic languages, fusional, agglutinative, and templatic patterns are common: fusional languages combine several grammatical categories in single affixes with internal vowel changes; agglutinative languages attach clear, separable affixes; templatic systems use non-concatenative modifications. Examples include Latin or Russian with rich noun case systems (fusional), Turkish with extensive suffixal morphology (agglutinative), and Arabic with templatic verb patterns. Key phenomena include paradigms, where a word’s set of inflected forms is organized into a table or stored in rules; irregular forms and language-specific exceptions; and historical changes that shape present-day inflectional systems.
