Infektioreittejä refers to the various ways infectious agents, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, can enter a host and cause disease. Understanding these transmission routes is crucial for preventing and controlling the spread of infections.

One primary route is direct contact. This includes touching an infected person, their bodily fluids, or contaminated surfaces. Droplet transmission is another common method, where respiratory droplets carrying pathogens are expelled into the air through coughing, sneezing, or talking, and inhaled by a susceptible individual. Airborne transmission occurs when smaller infectious particles remain suspended in the air for longer periods and can travel further distances, posing a risk even when the infected person is no longer present.

Vehicle-borne transmission involves the transfer of pathogens through contaminated inanimate objects or materials, such as food, water, blood, or medical equipment. Vector-borne transmission occurs when an insect or animal, like mosquitoes or ticks, carries and transmits an infectious agent from one host to another. Finally, fecal-oral transmission happens when infectious agents from feces contaminate hands, food, or water, which are then ingested by another person. Recognizing these different pathways allows for the implementation of targeted hygiene practices and public health measures to break the chain of infection.
