Ihoaärsytys

Ihoaärsytys, known in English as skin irritation, refers to a non-allergic inflammatory reaction of the skin caused by direct contact with an irritating substance. Unlike allergic contact dermatitis, which involves an immune system response, ihoaärsytys is a direct toxic effect on the skin cells. It is a common condition that can affect people of all ages and skin types.

The symptoms of ihoaärsytys typically include redness, itching, burning, stinging, dryness, and sometimes blistering or peeling of the skin at the site of contact. The severity of the irritation depends on the nature of the irritant, the duration of exposure, and the individual's skin sensitivity. Common irritants include soaps, detergents, solvents, strong acids and bases, and certain cosmetic ingredients. Repeated exposure to mild irritants can lead to chronic irritant contact dermatitis, characterized by persistent dryness, scaling, and fissuring of the skin.

Diagnosis of ihoaärsytys is usually based on the patient's history of exposure and the clinical appearance of the affected skin. Patch testing is not useful for irritant contact dermatitis, as it identifies allergic reactions. The primary treatment for ihoaärsytys is to identify and avoid the offending irritant. Gentle cleansing, moisturizing with barrier creams, and topical corticosteroids may be used to manage inflammation and repair the skin barrier. Prevention involves using protective measures such as gloves when handling irritant substances and choosing mild, fragrance-free personal care products.
