ISDNsignaling refers to the set of protocols and procedures used to establish, manage, and terminate communication sessions within the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN). ISDN is a set of communication standards designed to transmit voice, data, and video over traditional telephone networks by providing digital connectivity.

The signaling process in ISDN involves two primary layers: signaling at the customer interface (called the User-Network Signaling) and the network side (Network-Server Signaling). The most common signaling protocol in ISDN is the Signaling System No. 7 (SS7), which facilitates call setup, routing, and control functions across different network elements.

At the user level, ISDN uses the Integrated Services Digital Network User Part (ISUP) to handle call setup and management. The protocol ensures the reliable establishment of connections between callers, including features like caller ID and call forwarding. Signaling messages typically include information such as called and calling numbers, service features, and signaling states.

ISDN signaling can be categorized into two modes: 'channel-associated signaling' (CAS), where signaling information is carried on the same digital channel as the data or voice, and 'out-of-band signaling,' which uses a separate signaling channel (e.g., the D-channel). The D-channel in ISDN provides a dedicated pathway for signaling messages, enhancing the efficiency and reliability of call control.
