An IPv4 network refers to a network that uses the Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) addressing system. IPv4 is the fourth version of the Internet Protocol and is one of the two main versions of the Internet Protocol used on the internet, the other being IPv6. An IPv4 address is a 32-bit numerical label assigned to each device connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication. IPv4 addresses are typically written in dot-decimal notation, such as 192.168.1.1.

The IPv4 addressing scheme divides the address space into classes (A, B, C, D, E), although this class-based allocation is largely superseded by Classless Inter-Domain Routing (CIDR). IPv4 networks facilitate communication between devices by enabling them to be uniquely identified and located on the network. Routers use these addresses to forward data packets across the internet. The depletion of the IPv4 address space has been a significant concern, leading to the development and gradual adoption of IPv6. Techniques such as Network Address Translation (NAT) have been employed to extend the lifespan of IPv4 by allowing multiple devices to share a single public IPv4 address. Despite the emergence of IPv6, IPv4 remains widely in use and is a fundamental component of the internet's infrastructure.
