An IP address, or Internet Protocol address, is a numerical label assigned to each device connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication. It serves two main functions: host or network interface identification and location addressing. IP addresses are typically written in dot-decimal notation, such as 192.168.1.1, and consist of four numbers separated by periods.

There are two main versions of IP addresses: IPv4 and IPv6. IPv4, the older version, uses 32 bits and can represent approximately 4.3 billion unique addresses. Due to the rapid growth of internet-connected devices, IPv4 addresses are becoming scarce. IPv6, the newer version, uses 128 bits and can represent a vastly larger number of addresses, ensuring the continued growth of the internet.

IP addresses can be static or dynamic. A static IP address remains the same each time a device connects to the network, often used for servers or devices that need to be consistently accessible. A dynamic IP address is assigned temporarily from a pool of available addresses by a DHCP server and can change over time. This is common for most home users and mobile devices.

Understanding IP addresses is fundamental to comprehending how data travels across the internet and within local networks. They are essential for routing information, identifying devices, and enabling communication between computers and other network-enabled devices.
