IPSec (Internet Protocol Security) is a suite of protocols used to secure Internet Protocol (IP) communications by authenticating and encrypting each IP packet in a communication session. It is widely used to secure data flows between private networks, and between remote users and a private network. IPSec operates at the network layer, providing a secure channel for data transmission.

The IPSec suite includes two main protocols: Authentication Header (AH) and Encapsulating Security Payload (ESP). AH provides data integrity and authentication, while ESP provides confidentiality, data integrity, and authentication. These protocols can be used together or independently, depending on the security requirements.

IPSec operates in two modes: Transport Mode and Tunnel Mode. In Transport Mode, only the data portion of each packet is encrypted, while the header remains unchanged. This mode is typically used for end-to-end security between two hosts. In Tunnel Mode, the entire original packet is encrypted, and a new IP header is added, providing security for the entire packet. This mode is commonly used for site-to-site VPNs.

IPSec uses Internet Key Exchange (IKE) to establish secure communication channels. IKE negotiates the security parameters for the IPSec session, including the encryption and authentication algorithms, and generates the keys used for encryption and authentication.

IPSec is a fundamental technology for securing communications over the Internet, enabling secure remote access, secure site-to-site connections, and secure data transmission in various applications. Its widespread adoption and robust security features make it a cornerstone of modern network security infrastructure.
