IITJEE

IIT JEE, short for Indian Institutes of Technology Joint Entrance Examination, is the admissions examination used to gain entry to undergraduate programs at the Indian Institutes of Technology. The term IIT JEE is largely historical; since the 2010s the admissions framework has been a two-tier system: JEE Main, a broad screening test for entrance to many engineering colleges in India, and JEE Advanced, a highly selective examination for admission to the IITs.

Exams assess knowledge in physics, chemistry and mathematics. Question formats have included multiple-choice items and numerical-answer questions, with weighting and marking schemes that have changed over the years. Candidates typically prepare through school coursework and coaching programs.

Administration: JEE Main is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), while JEE Advanced is organized by one of the IITs on a rotating basis, under the supervision of the Joint Admission Board. Admission to IITs is offered to students ranking highly in JEE Advanced and meeting eligibility criteria.

Scope and notes: The IITs are among India's premier engineering institutions, with a large demand and limited seats. The selection process is highly competitive, and the IITJEE ecosystem influences engineering education and career opportunities in India. While historically known as IIT JEE, the current system uses JEE Main and JEE Advanced.
