Höyrykondensaattorit are devices used to condense steam back into liquid water. This process is fundamental in many industrial applications, particularly in power generation. The primary function of a steam condenser is to lower the exhaust pressure of a steam turbine, thereby increasing the overall efficiency of the power plant. By converting the exhaust steam into water, a significant pressure drop is created across the turbine, allowing more energy to be extracted from the steam.

The most common type of steam condenser is the surface condenser. In this design, steam flows over a bundle of tubes through which cooling water circulates. The cooling water absorbs heat from the steam, causing it to condense. The condensed water, known as condensate, is then pumped out and returned to the boiler to be reheated and used again. The cooling water can be sourced from a river, lake, ocean, or a cooling tower.

Another type is the jet condenser, where steam and cooling water are mixed directly. This type is simpler and cheaper but results in a diluted condensate that is not suitable for direct reuse in boilers without further treatment. Steam condensers are essential components for maximizing energy recovery and minimizing environmental impact in thermal power stations.
