Höyrykompressioperiaatteella refers to the operating principle of a vapor-compression refrigeration cycle. This is the most common method used in refrigerators, air conditioners, and heat pumps for cooling. The cycle involves a refrigerant that repeatedly changes between a liquid and a gas state, absorbing and releasing heat in the process.

The cycle begins with the compressor, which increases the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant gas. This hot, high-pressure gas then flows to the condenser, typically located outside the cooled space. Here, the gas releases its heat to the surroundings and condenses into a high-pressure liquid. This liquid then passes through an expansion valve, where its pressure and temperature drop significantly, transforming it into a low-pressure, cold liquid-gas mixture.

This cold mixture then enters the evaporator, which is located inside the cooled space. As the refrigerant absorbs heat from the surroundings, it evaporates into a low-pressure gas. This absorbed heat is what provides the cooling effect. The low-pressure gas then returns to the compressor, and the cycle repeats.

The key components of the vapor-compression cycle are the compressor, condenser, expansion valve, and evaporator. The efficiency of the system depends on the properties of the refrigerant used and the operating conditions of each component. This principle allows for the transfer of heat from a colder area to a warmer area, which is fundamental to refrigeration and air conditioning technology.
