Hérodiade

Hérodiade is an opera in four acts by Jules Massenet, with a libretto by Paul Milliet and Henri Grémont. It is based on the biblical story of Herod Antipas and his stepdaughter Salome, as recounted in the Gospel of Matthew. The opera premiered in Brussels in 1881, and later in Paris in 1884.

The story is set in ancient Judea and focuses on the love triangle between Hérodiade, her mother Hérode, and the prophet Jean. Hérodiade is disguised and unaware of her true parentage. She falls in love with Jean, who is imprisoned by Hérode. Hérode, in turn, desires Hérodiade and is jealous of Jean. The opera builds to a dramatic climax where Hérodiade's identity is revealed, and Jean is ultimately condemned.

Massenet's score is known for its lyrical melodies, rich orchestration, and dramatic intensity, characteristic of French grand opera. While the opera has been performed less frequently than some of Massenet's other works, such as Manon or Werther, it is appreciated for its musical beauty and compelling dramatic situations. Notable interpretations have been given by singers such as Dame Joan Sutherland and Renée Fleming. The opera explores themes of forbidden love, identity, and religious conflict within a historical setting.
