In most countries, a specific telephone number, such as 112 in Europe or 911 in North America, is designated for emergency calls. These numbers are free to dial and are accessible from any telephone, including mobile phones, even without a service plan or when the keypad is locked. When an emergency call is made, the call is routed to a Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP), where trained dispatchers, also known as telecommunicators or emergency operators, answer.

Dispatchers are trained to gather critical information efficiently. This includes the nature of the emergency, the exact location of the incident, the caller's name and phone number, and details about any individuals involved or injured. They may also provide pre-arrival instructions, such as first aid guidance or advice on how to stay safe until help arrives. The accuracy and clarity of the information provided by the caller are paramount to a swift and effective response.

The technology behind emergency calls has evolved significantly. Modern systems often include enhanced 911 (E911) or equivalent features that automatically transmit the caller's location to the PSAP, reducing the need for the caller to describe their whereabouts in stressful situations.
