Hyväksyntäotanta, known in English as acceptance sampling, is a method of quality control that involves inspecting a sample of a batch of items to determine whether the entire batch should be accepted or rejected. This statistical procedure is used when it is impractical or too costly to inspect every single item in a production run. The decision to accept or reject the batch is based on the number of defects found in the sample.

The process begins by defining a sampling plan. This plan specifies the sample size to be taken from a batch and the acceptance number, which is the maximum number of defects allowed in the sample for the batch to be considered acceptable. If the number of defects found in the sample exceeds the acceptance number, the entire batch is rejected. Rejected batches may be 100% inspected, reworked, or scrapped.

Acceptance sampling is widely used in manufacturing, procurement, and other industries to ensure that purchased or produced goods meet specified quality standards. It provides a balance between the cost of inspection and the risk of accepting defective products or rejecting good products. The effectiveness of acceptance sampling depends on the appropriate design of the sampling plan, considering factors such as the desired level of quality assurance and the cost of potential errors.
