Hydroxyacetone

Hydroxyacetone, also known as acetol, is a simple organic compound with the formula CH3-CO-CH2OH (or HO-CH2-CO-CH3). It is the simplest example of an alpha-hydroxy ketone. The molecule consists of a carbonyl group adjacent to a hydroxymethyl group, giving it both ketone and alcohol functional groups. It is a colorless liquid that is miscible with water and many polar organic solvents.

In industry, hydroxyacetone is used as a chemical intermediate in the synthesis of fragrances, flavors, and pharmaceutical intermediates. It can participate in aldol reactions and can be oxidized or reduced to related compounds. For example, catalytic or chemical reduction of the carbonyl group affords 1,2-propanediol (propylene glycol). It can also be used as a building block for more complex carbonyl compounds.
