Hvældefasen
Hvældefasen refers to a specific stage in the growth of certain mollusks, particularly bivalves like oysters and mussels. It is characterized by a noticeable swelling or bulging of the mantle tissue, which is the organ responsible for secreting the shell. This expansion of the mantle is a precursor to the formation of new shell material or the repair of existing shell damage.
During the hvældefasen, the mollusk's metabolic rate may increase as it mobilizes resources for shell deposition.
