Hexosederived

Hexosederived compounds are chemical species that originate from hexose monosaccharides or are produced by modifying hexose units. Hexoses such as glucose, galactose, mannose, and fructose are central to energy metabolism and the biosynthesis of more complex carbohydrates. Hexosederived products include sugar acids (for example glucuronic acid and iduronic acid), amino sugars (such as glucosamine and galactosamine), deoxy sugars (like rhamnose), and sugar alcohols (such as sorbitol and mannitol), as well as glycosides where a sugar moiety is bound to another functional group or aglycone.

Biological roles of hexosederived compounds are diverse. They form glycoproteins, proteoglycans, and glycosaminoglycans that participate in cell signaling, cell–cell recognition, and the structural framework of extracellular matrices. Nucleotide sugars derived from hexoses, including UDP-glucose, UDP-glucuronic acid, and GDP-mannose, serve as activated donors for glycosylation reactions that decorate proteins and lipids. In metabolism, hexose derivatives contribute to the formation and remodeling of cell walls, membranes, and energy storage molecules.

Analytically and synthetically, hexosederived compounds are central to glycobiology and carbohydrate chemistry. They are studied via chromatographic, spectrometric, and enzymatic methods, and can be produced or modified through oxidation, reduction, amination, dehydration, and enzymatic glycosylation.
