Heterotsüklilised compounds are organic compounds that contain a ring structure where at least one atom in the ring is not carbon. These non-carbon atoms, known as heteroatoms, are typically nitrogen, oxygen, or sulfur. The presence of heteroatoms significantly influences the chemical and physical properties of these molecules compared to their carbocyclic counterparts.

The diversity of heterocyclic compounds is vast, and they play crucial roles in many areas of chemistry and biology. Many naturally occurring compounds, such as nucleic acids (DNA and RNA), vitamins (like riboflavin and thiamine), and alkaloids, are heterocyclic. In pharmaceuticals, heterocyclic structures are common motifs found in a large percentage of marketed drugs, due to their ability to interact with biological targets.

Heterocyclic compounds can be classified based on several criteria. One common classification is based on the size of the ring, such as five-membered (e.g., furan, pyrrole, thiophene) or six-membered rings (e.g., pyridine, pyrimidine, piperidine). Another classification distinguishes between aromatic and non-aromatic heterocycles. Aromatic heterocycles possess a delocalized pi electron system, similar to benzene, which confers enhanced stability and reactivity. Examples include pyridine and imidazole. Non-aromatic heterocycles, on the other hand, do not exhibit aromaticity.

The synthesis and study of heterocyclic compounds form a significant branch of organic chemistry, known as heterocyclic chemistry. Understanding their structure, reactivity, and properties is essential for developing new materials, medicines, and agrochemicals.
