Hermopääte

Hermopääte, also known as a nerve ending or terminal, is the specialized terminal part of an axon in the nervous system. It is where a neuron communicates with other cells, typically muscle cells or glands, or other neurons. This communication occurs at a synapse, a junction between two nerve cells, or between a nerve cell and a muscle or gland cell.

When an electrical impulse, or action potential, reaches the hermopääte, it triggers the release of neurotransmitters. These chemical messengers are stored in small sacs called vesicles within the hermopääte. Upon stimulation, these vesicles fuse with the cell membrane of the hermopääte and release their neurotransmitter contents into the synaptic cleft, the small space between the presynaptic terminal and the postsynaptic cell.

The released neurotransmitters then diffuse across the synaptic cleft and bind to specific receptors on the membrane of the target cell. This binding can either excite or inhibit the target cell, influencing its activity. For example, in a neuromuscular junction, the hermopääte of a motor neuron releases acetylcholine, which binds to receptors on muscle fibers, causing them to contract.

The structure of hermopääte can vary depending on its function and the type of neuron. Some hermopääte are simple enlargements of the axon, while others are more complex, forming specialized structures like synaptic boutons. The precise structure and molecular machinery of the hermopääte are crucial for efficient and accurate neural signaling. Disruptions in hermopääte function can lead to various neurological disorders.
