Henkilötunnisteita are identification numbers used in Finland to uniquely identify individuals. The Finnish personal identity code, or henkilötunnus, is a crucial piece of information for both citizens and residents. It is assigned by the Digital and Population Data Services Agency.

The structure of a henkilötunnus consists of a date of birth, a hyphen, and a four-digit number. The first six digits represent the individual's date of birth in the format DDMMYY. For example, someone born on January 1st, 1990, would have 010190 as the first part. The following three digits are a serial number, and the last digit is a checksum. This checksum is calculated using a specific algorithm to ensure the validity of the entire code.

Henkilötunnisteita are used extensively in Finland for administrative purposes. They are required for opening bank accounts, obtaining employment, accessing healthcare services, and engaging in various other official transactions. The personal identity code is considered sensitive information, and its disclosure is regulated by privacy laws to prevent misuse. When referring to a henkilötunnus, it is common practice to use only the first few digits and an asterisk for the remaining ones, such as 010190-****, to protect personal privacy.
